You can type Urdu here without installing anything or changing a single setting (اردو). Urdu is written right to left, and the page handles that for you: click the keys, type on your own keyboard, or spell words out in Latin letters and let them turn into Urdu.

Type with your mouse, finger, or keyboard

Click the on-screen keys with your mouse or finger if you don't know the Urdu layout. On a computer you can also type on your own keyboard using the standard Urdu mapping, and press Esc to switch that mapping on or off (the tooltip shows "ON / OFF (Escape)"). On a phone or tablet, tap "Load Keyboard" and type on the screen, with no need to change your device's own keyboard. The text flows right to left on its own.

Type by sound (aap kaise hain → آپ کیسے ہیں)

Don't know where the Urdu letters sit? Turn on transliteration (type by sound), then spell a word the way it sounds in Latin letters and choose the Urdu spelling from the popup with the arrow keys and Space or Enter, or click it. It works word by word, and the ranking is a best guess, so check the result before moving on.

The Urdu layout and the Shift keys

The main layer carries the everyday letters: ط ص ھ د ٹ پ ت ب ج ح along the top, then م و ر ن ل ہ ا ک ی, then ق ف ے س ش غ ع. Hold Shift for the rest: ظ ض ذ ڈ ث چ خ ژ ز ڑ, the hamza forms ء and ؤ, the alef madda آ, the letter گ, and the Urdu question mark ؟, which faces the opposite way to the Latin one.

Phonetic and other layouts

Learned to type on a phonetic board? The menu also offers Urdu Phonetic and CRULP Phonetic, where letters sit near their Latin sound-alikes, plus the InPage Monotype layout that many publishers use. Pick one and the keys change straight away; clicking, your physical keyboard, and typing by sound all keep working.

Copy, translate, or send your text

When your text is ready, hit Copy (or Ctrl+C / Cmd+C) and paste it anywhere: WhatsApp, a document, a search box. Undo, Redo, and Clear are in the same toolbar. From this page you can also translate what you wrote, search Google in Urdu, look it up on Wikipedia, or send it as an email. If Word puts your Urdu the wrong way round, set the paragraph direction to right-to-left.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Urdu keyboard free?

Yes, completely. No installation, sign-up, or download. Open the page and start typing in Urdu right away.

Can I use this Urdu keyboard on my phone (iPhone or Android)?

Yes. Tap "Load Keyboard" and use the on-screen keys, or set your phone's own keyboard to Urdu and type into the page. Typing by sound and the Copy button work on mobile too.

Do I need to install an Urdu keyboard on Windows, Mac, iOS, or Android?

Not for this page; it works in your browser. To type Urdu system-wide in every app: Windows → Settings → Time & Language → Language; macOS → System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources; iOS → Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards; Android → Settings → System → Languages & input.

How do I type letters like ڈ, ڑ, or گ?

Hold Shift and press the matching key. The Shift layer carries ظ ض ذ ڈ ث چ خ ژ ز ڑ, the hamza forms, the alef madda آ, the letter گ, and the Urdu question mark ؟.

Is typing by sound the same as translation?

No. Typing by sound rewrites how a word sounds into Urdu letters, so salam stays the word salam (سلام). Translation changes the meaning into another language. Use the Translate section for an actual translation.
